GREYSTONES – A WARNING FOR HOLYHEAD
In 2005 land and rights of way were closed in and around Greystones harbour in preparation for the construction of a new harbour, marina, retail space, high quality residential properties and public recreational amenities. Construction started in 2008 but was halted in 2010 due to the conditions of the Irish property market.
Work restarted on the new harbour which opened recently. A new marina opened in April 2013. Development of the surrounding in-filled area is far from complete and much of the area is barren.
We believe that the problems experienced from the Greystones development are a warning for us here in Holyhead. Our Councillors and Planning Committee should take the Greystones experience into account when considering the detailed planning applications from Conygar Stena for Newry Beach.
After at least 7 years the whole development is a long way from completion.
Here in Holyhead we already have a marina. We do not need another one. We do not need 350 waterfront apartments and houses.
